Haven smart door lock can stand up to a battering ram

As mobile technology and wireless networks continue to saturate the world, some companies have turned to adding smarts to the lock that keeps your home secure. However, even the smartest lock can still fall victim to a particularly motivated thief with a bump key or a strong kick. Haven is a new kind of connected door lock that’s not so quick to fail, and it’s currently tearing it up on Kickstarter. It’s already halfway to the goal with almost a month to spare. Oh, and this is one crowdfunding campaign with a nearly finished product to actually show off.

Haven isn’t just another deadbolt. A deadbolt is fundamentally limited by the frame of the door. All that’s keeping the door locked is a thin strip of wood where the bolt slides in. Haven works more like a doorstop, but it’s mounted to the floor with an automated accordion lift gate that rises up to keep the door closed. The door can’t swing open because Haven’s steel frame is in the way, anchored to the house.

The low profile of Haven makes it almost impossible to force the door open. The official video above shows off the basic concept — it’s a polite and competent crowdfunding pitch. However, the campaign’s page also has a second video that shows Haven standing up to repeated kicks, a sledgehammer, an axe, and abattering ram. You’d basically need to break the door in half to get inside.

So, how do you get inside the right way? Haven will have a mobileapp that provides access, but it also connects to the internet so you can log into the (hopefully very secure) Haven website to unlock your door remotely. It will also send you alerts if someone does try to break in based on data gathered by the built-in accelerometer. If you’re on the way out, there’s a manual release switch on Haven so you don’t have to mess with an app just to step out the door.

All the early bird rewards are gone, so the lowest tier that comes with a Haven is $269. The campaign is after $150,000, and it’s probably going to pull in much more.
