Motorola has added a handy feature on the Moto X is called Attentive display to complete the power button mashing.
Attentive display your face used as an indicator and either extends or accelerates your screen standby time.
Attentive Display settings are hidden under the display in the Phone Settings.

Eh, Samsung had this feature awhile ago, and it never really worked all that well. I just set my screen timeout for longer, and shut off my screen manually when I'm done. I don't see why that's more difficult

It could be a sensor problem. The two sensors for it are on both sides of the speaker at the bottom. If you're using a case or screen protector, it may be obscuring them. I guess you could try going into moto under settings and turning moto display on and off. If sensors are broken, then you will have to get a replacement

This was my favorite new feature of the second gen moto x. However, since the update to 5.0, doesn't work at all on my phone.
