It’s an established fact that geeks love Lego. They also tend to love DIY projects. One of my favorite DIY projects? Hacking a spare USB flash drive into a 2 by 4 Lego brick. Now, there’s finally a retail packaged option for those of you who want something a bit more polished and official.
The memory mavens at PNY have just taken the wraps off of a fully-licensed Lego USB flash drive.
It’s not going to blow you away with USB 3.0 speeds, and it’s not going to provide bottomless flash capacity for transporting files… but it’s still an awesome little drive.The drive itself looks like a sandwich of three 2 by 4 plates, and yes, you can actually build with it. It’s been designed to official Lego specs so you can incorporate the PNY drive into your next spaceship, candy dispenser, or tardis.
PNY’s Lego flash drive will be available in 8GB and 16GB capacities, and they’re not demanding a huge premium for them. The company’s website only lists the blue 16GB model at the moment, and it’s priced at $9.99 — a little under two buck more than the stuffy 16GB Attache drive Lord Business would probably want to carry around in his suit pocket. PNY sweetens the deal ever-so-slightly by throwing in an actual 2 by 4 Lego brick in either blue or red to kickstart the building fun.
For the initial release, PNY opted to stick with classic, primary colored Lego: red, yellow, and blue. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that there will be plenty of demand for the new drives and that PNY will offer the additional colors you’re looking for (black, orange, lime green) soon enough.
