For a while now, the most impressive fan-generated remakes are created using either Minecraft or Skyrim — the former because creation is the very nature of the game, and the latter because the modding tools are impressive. What the internet always seems to forget, though, is that LittleBigPlanet has always allowed for insanely impressive remakes, especially thanks to the improved engine in 2 and 3. Whereas someone will remake Portal levels in Minecraft, LittleBigPlanet projects sometimes don’t even remake games, but instead remake productivity software and even operating systems.
This time around, one very dedicated fan remade all of Final Fantasy VII in LBP’s engine. Like, all of it.Aside from the LBP aesthetic, the remake acts just like the original JRPG, complete with a battle system and Limit Breaks, all five type of Materia, the game’s soundtrack, world map, enemies, bosses, characters, and every cut-scene and line of dialog.
Square Enix has made it very clear that a true Final Fantasy VIIremake will likely never happen, and many fans assume — if anything — it’ll only happen to remedy a financial emergency. So, it’s up to heroes like Colliver, who spend two years remaking the game with hilariously adorable sack people.
You can try out the remake with LittleBigPlanet 3 on the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita, or with LittleBigPlanet 2 on the PS3. You can also check out many, many videos documenting the project over on Colliver’s YouTube channel.
